Privacy Policy

Last updated: 21 September 2026

This policy explains what personal data Your Home Explained collects, why, and what your rights are. We’ve tried to write it in plain English rather than legal jargon — if anything isn’t clear, get in touch and we’ll explain.

Who we are

Your Home Explained is run by Georgina Bisby. For the purposes of data protection law, Georgina Bisby is the “data controller” of the personal data collected through this website.

What personal data we collect

We only collect what we need to run the site and respond to you:

  • Contact form submissions — if you use our Contact Us form, we collect your name, email address, and whatever message you send us, so we can reply.
  • Newsletter sign-ups — if you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address (and name, if you give it) through our email platform, MailerLite, so we can send you the newsletter.
  • Website usage data — we use Google Analytics (via Google’s Site Kit plugin) to understand how visitors use the site: pages viewed, time on site, approximate location (town/country level, from your IP address), device and browser type, and how you arrived at the site. This data is aggregated and doesn’t identify you personally.
  • Cookies — small text files stored on your device. See the Cookies section below.

We do not collect payment details, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.

How we use your data, and our legal basis for doing so

  • To reply to messages sent via the contact form — legitimate interest (responding to enquiries).
  • To send our newsletter — consent, which you give when you sign up, and can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
  • To understand and improve the site (via analytics) — legitimate interest in understanding how our content is used so we can make it more useful.
  • To track when a purchase is made through one of our affiliate links — see Affiliate links below — legitimate interest.

Cookies

Cookies used on this site fall into these categories:

  • Essential cookies — needed for the site to function (e.g. remembering form entries while you complete them).
  • Analytics cookies — set by Google Analytics to help us understand site traffic, as described above.
  • Third-party cookies — if you click an Amazon affiliate link, Amazon may set a cookie on your device to track that the visit came from this site.

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. Blocking cookies may affect how some parts of the site work.

Affiliate links

Your Home Explained is a participant in the Amazon Associates Programme, an affiliate advertising programme designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon. This means that if you click a product link on this site and go on to make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We only recommend products we’d genuinely suggest to a friend, and this never affects the price you pay.

Who we share data with

We don’t sell your personal data. We do use a small number of trusted third-party services to run the site, who process data on our behalf:

  • Google (Analytics/Site Kit) — website usage statistics.
  • MailerLite — our email newsletter platform.
  • SureForms — our contact form plugin, hosted on our own WordPress site.
  • Amazon Associates — affiliate link tracking, as described above.

Some of these providers may process data on servers outside the UK/EEA (for example, in the United States). Where this happens, they do so under appropriate legal safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep your data

We keep contact form enquiries only as long as needed to deal with them and for a reasonable period afterwards in case of follow-up. Newsletter subscriber data is kept until you unsubscribe. Analytics data is retained in aggregated form in line with Google Analytics’ standard retention settings.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Ask what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it (right of access)
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data (right to rectification)
  • Ask us to delete your data (right to erasure), in some circumstances
  • Object to how we’re using your data, or ask us to restrict it (rights to object/restrict)
  • Ask for your data in a portable format (right to data portability)
  • Withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent (e.g. unsubscribing from the newsletter)

To exercise any of these rights, contact us via the Contact Us page. You also have the right to complain to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), though we’d appreciate the chance to sort out any concerns directly first.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example if we start using a new tool or service. The “last updated” date at the top will always reflect the latest version.
