October 2026: Your home in October

The first issue of the Your Home Explained newsletter, sent 1 October 2026.

Hello,

This is my very first Your Home Explained newsletter, and if you’re reading this as a subscriber, you’re one of my very first. I can’t tell you how happy that makes me, so thank you for being here right from the start.

Each month I send subscribers the jobs worth doing around the home, plus early access to free downloads. Here’s October.

Four things to do before November

  1. Book your boiler service now, before Gas Safe engineers get busy.
  2. Bleed any radiators that are cold at the top.
  3. Test your smoke and CO alarms when the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October.
  4. Clear your gutters once the leaves are down, or get a professional in if it means a tall ladder.

Nearly 1 in 5 house fires in England last year had a smoke alarm that failed to go off. That’s why job 3 matters.

On my YouTube channel: 5 drilling mistakes that ruin walls

Ever put a wall plug in a hole only for it to spin, wobble or pull straight back out? Before you blame the fixing, it might be how you drilled the hole.
